Dr. Joachim Urban – Developmental Neurobiology

Research topics:

We are interested in temporal specification of neural stem cells in Drosophila. These cells divide asymmetric thereby generating most times another stem cell and a second daughter cell with less developmental potential. The types of these daughter cells not only depend on positional cues, inherited from the stem cells, but also change over time.
Our projects aim to elucidate the regulation mechanisms of temporal determination factors and understand the regulation of their activity.
Analysis of structure and function of the Zn-finger transcription factors Hunchback and Krüppel in their role for the temporal specification of neuroblasts in Drosophila melanogaster.
Nuclear localization of seven-up and castor mRNA in the embryonic neuroblasts of Drosophila melanogaster.
